| Abstract: | We propose an intrinsically gain-flattened staircase profile, C-band erbium doped silica-based fiber amplifier (EDFA). This EDFA is shown to exhibit uniform amplification characteristics with a gain excursion of ±1.4 dB over a bandwidth of 34 nm with a 980 nm pump and a gain excursion of ±1 dB over 30 nm bandwidth using 1480 nm pump. The proposed doped fiber consists of an inner core surrounded by a depressed core, with selective erbium doping only in the latter region including the cladding. The noise figure of the proposed design is shown to decrease from about 6.5 dB at 1525 nm to 4.5 dB around 1560 nm. Coupling efficiency from a conventional undoped transmission fiber to the proposed EDFA is also analysed and is seen to be more than 95%. The tolerance of the proposed design to parameters such as core radii and refractive index steps has also been studied. |
