description.abstractA procedure to predict the response of the elastic coupler of a four-bar linkage allowing for possible fluctuation in crank speed is presented. The response is described by Mathieu–Hill equations obtained by applying Hamilton’s principle and method of Kantorovitch. These are solved by the RKM-method of numerical integration. The effect of crank inertia on coupler response is studied. It is concluded that crank speed fluctuation gives rise to increased strains and hence should be controlled by suitable crank inertia.en
