Abstract: An algorithm to improve the dynamic behaviour of a structure by local damped beam modifications is presented. A modification dynamic stiffness matrix (DSM) has been constructed for the added beam which is integrated with the DSM of the unmodified structure. The method requires the identification of the mass, stiffness and damping matrices or a finite-element model (which may have been updated) of the structure. In cases where the full receptance matrix of a structure can be measured the modification can be directly implemented on the test data. The principal focus of the effort resides in the formulation of a modification algorithm using hysteretically damped beam elements.
