Abstract: We report on the development of a knowledge representation model,which based on the SHARED object model reported in shared workspaces for Computer-Adied Collaborative Engineering(Wong.A and Sriram.D.Technical report,IESL 93-06,Entelligent Engineering System Laboratory.Department of Civel Engineering.MIT March 1993)and research in Engineering Design(Wong A.and Sriram D.Sharad:An information Model for Coorporative Product Development 1993.Fall 21-39)-Our current model is implemented as a layered scheme that incorporate both an evolving artifact and its associated design process. To represent artifacts and they evolve.we define objects recursively with out a pre-defined granularity on this recursive decomposition.This eliminates the need for translation between level of abstraction in the design process.This SHARED model extend traditional OOP in three ways:(i)by allowing explicit relationship classes with inheritence hierarchies:(ii)by permitted constraints to be associated with objects and relationship:and (iii)by comparing similar object and three different level(from function and behavior.Five premitive objective define the process goal,plan,specification,decosion and context.Goal object achieve function.interduce constraints,interduce new artified modify existing once,and creat subgoals.Plan objective order goals and link a product hierarchy to a pocess hierarchy.Specification objects define user inputs as constraits.Decision object relate goals to user desicion and context objects discribe the design context.Operaters that are applied to design objects collectively from a representation of a design process for a given context.The representation is robust enough to effectively model four design paradigms discribe in journal ofCAD(Gorti S.and Sriram R.D symbol to form mapping:a framework for conceptual Design 1996 28(11),853-870):top-down decomposition step-wise refinement,bottam up composition and constrain propagation.To demonstrate this.we represent and design of two TV remote controller in the SHARAD architecture.The examples reveals that certain aspects of artifacts knowledge are essentially context independent and that this represantation can be a foundation for robust knowledge based systems in design.
