Abstract: An effort has been made with all possible interatomic interactions to gain insight into the nature of intercalant-clay interactions and their effect on the lattice dynamics of muscovite layered silicates. The phonon dispersion along the axis perpendicular to the basal plane in muscovite is calculated by using an angular force model and are compared with available experimental results. Among all interatomic interactions, (AI-Si) interaction gives a significant contribution in determining the phonons and it leads to a good agreement with experiment in such a complex structure compounds.
