Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel coaxial dual-core erbium doped fiber profile characterized by an intrinsically flat gain spectrum. It is shown that by doping only the outer core, it is possible to achieve gain flattening over 40 nm of the amplifier spectrum from 1525 to 1565 nm. The gain and noise characteristics, pump efficiency and output signal saturation powers of such a gain flattened fiber amplifier are also studied.
