A model for the analysis of distortion of a large thrust bearing pad is proposed. The analysis aims to simulate the realistic conditions in bearings. Free-edge boundary conditions are implemented and spring-supported pads are considered. The Reynolds and biharmonic bending equations are solved using the iterative technique. The inadequacy of this treatment for the bending equation is shown and an alternative approach is outlined. The model is tested for boundary conditions reported in the literature and the results are in good agreement.
